Renowned dressage coach and judge Alex Gingell is no stranger to the demands of competitive equestrian sports. Born into a farming family in Cambridge, Alex developed a deep-rooted passion for eventing from an early age. His commitment to perfecting his craft saw him compete at the highest levels against some of the sport’s future greats, however, a serious accident brought his competitive riding to a sudden halt.
Alex’s promising career was abruptly ended by a rotational fall during an event at Weston Park. The accident left him with severe injuries, including a broken sternum, shoulder, and caved-in ribs. Alex was fortunate to survive after being rendered unconscious for eight days.
Despite this tragic setback, Alex’s love for the sport never wavered. As he transitioned into coaching and judging, he remained determined to support others in achieving their full potential. Sadly Alex found that the significant impact of his injuries, combined with years of physical strain from rugby had taken its toll on his body, and by the age of 40 he was suffering with debilitating nagging pain and heavily compromised mobility. Alex’s other passion, running, had become impossible, and despite trying every available treatment nothing offered lasting relief.

As the symptoms worsened, so did the frustration levels, and Alex found that his weight began to spiral out of control, along with other associated health issues. The cycle of pain and discomfort seemed never-ending and he felt destined for a lifetime of reduced activity and painkillers.

In recent years, Alex has risen through the ranks to become a respected List 3a British Dressage judge and is on track to achieve List 2 in 2025.
